Mode of Action of Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol has been shown to exert a strong inhibitory action on microbial protein synthesis (Gale and Folkes, 1953; Maxwell and Nickel, 1954; Wisseman et al., 1954). Hence, the hypotheses that the antibiotic may act simply as the antagonist of one amino acid or another are especially attractive (Mentzer et al., 1950; Woolley, 1950; Bergmann and Sicher, 1952; Molho and Molho-Lacroix, 1952)...

Mechanisms of action of antibiotics. I. Additive action of chloramphenicol and tetracyclines on the growth of Escherichia coli.

The present study is concerned with the relationships between the actions of chloramphenicol and of members of the tetracycline group on bacterial growth. The antimicrobial spectra of these drugs are similar as expressed by the collective nomen, broad-spectrum antibiotics. Chloramphenicol and tetracyclines can produce cross resistance in bacteria (Pansy et al., 1950, Fusillo and Romansky, 1951)...

Combined action of chloramphenicol and ampicillin on chloramphenicol-resistant Haemophilus influenzae.

The interaction of ampicillin and chloramphenicol on three ampicillin-susceptible, chloramphenicol-resistant strains of Haemophilus influenzae was studied by checkerboard testing with subcultures, time-kill experiments, and a disk method. In all three strains there was inhibition of the bactericidal action of ampicillin by chloramphenicol at concentrations close to the MIC (10 micrograms/ml). T...
